WHERE I’VE BEEN: OCEAN PARK, HONG KONG

Your first holiday is always one to remember. Mine was a family trip to China and Hong Kong in 2007 to meet and visit some relatives. One attraction I fondly remember was heading to Ocean Park, a theme park situated in Aberdeen of southern Hong Kong. This aquatic based theme park encompasses two regions; the Waterfront and The Summit which are separated by mountainous terrain, but connected by the Cable Car and Ocean Express funicular train.

After entering the park on the Waterfront region, we visited the animal exhibits and explored and soaked in the novelty of the theme park. Following this, we rode the Cable Car for approximately 20 minutes across to the Summit part of the park for the rides and attractions.

The ‘Raging River’ found in the Summit was first ride we as a family went on. Sitting in a log boat, we navigated around a set water coarse filled with several turns and a vertical drop at the end, that sees the log boat move at a speed of 58km/hr. Despite the Halloween pop up decorations and characters in costume, which added to the fright due to our visit during Halloween, the ride overall was exhilarating and the water splashes very refreshing on a warm day.

The ‘Crazy Galleon’ of the Summit was the second and final ride we went on. This was a pirate ship that swung from side to side at a tilt of almost a 45°, 20m above the ground. I remember questioning the safety of this ride, because we were not strapped in, but only holding onto a bar in front of us. I also remember laughing so much that I was in stitches the whole way through. It’d be interesting to see if any changes to safety have been made since our visit in 2007.

We finished off our visit to the park by stopping at the Ocean Park Tower of the Summit, a rotating observation tower that allows for a 360° view of the park, 200m above sea level. We were able to see the construction work taking place in the park, as well as the Waterfront side of the park.

No doubt would I like to visit Ocean Park again as a teenager/young adult and experience more of the attractions the park has to offer.
